About
Chamera Lake was formed by the Chamera hydroelectric dam, commissioned in the mid-1990s on the Ravi. It lies about 25 km from Dalhousie on the way down to Chamba, at around 1,700 m, and is the main water body visitors see in this part of the district. The Himachal tourism department runs pedal and motor boats from a jetty near Khajjiar-side viewpoints; the surrounding slopes are forested and the water level swings with the season. It is usually visited as a stop on the Dalhousie–Khajjiar–Chamba circuit rather than a destination in itself.
How to reach
- It is on the Dalhousie–Chamba road, about 25 km below Dalhousie and 20 km before Chamba.
- Taxis on the Dalhousie–Khajjiar–Chamba loop stop at the lake.
- Nearest railhead and airport are at Pathankot, roughly 3 hours away.
Best time to visit
March to June and September to November. The water is highest after the monsoon; winter mornings can be foggy.
