About
Keylong is the largest settlement in Lahaul and the main halt on the Manali–Leh highway before the Baralacha La. It stands above the Bhaga river, its terraces green with barley and potatoes in summer against bare brown mountains. Kardang, Shashur and Tayul monasteries sit on the hillsides nearby, the first two within a walk or short drive. Since the Atal Tunnel opened, Keylong is reachable from Manali year-round, changing what was once a place snowbound for months. It is the usual overnight stop for cyclists and travellers heading to Ladakh.
How to reach
- From Manali, about 115 km via the Atal Tunnel and Sissu (3–4 hours), now open all year.
- HRTC and HPTDC buses on the Manali–Keylong–Leh route stop here; the Leh bus continues over Baralacha.
- Nearest airports are Kullu (Bhuntar) and Leh, both a long drive.
Best time to visit
June to September for the Leh road and monastery visits. Winter access via the tunnel is possible but roads beyond Keylong are shut.
