About
Kibber sits on a limestone plateau across the gorge from Ki Monastery, about 16 km from Kaza. Once described as one of the highest villages connected by road and electricity, it has whitewashed mud-brick houses and barley fields worked in the short summer. The surrounding Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary protects ibex, blue sheep and their predators; from December to March, wildlife teams and visitors track snow leopard on the slopes above the village, and Kibber has become a hub for that. A bridge links it to Chicham across one of the deepest local canyons.
How to reach
- From Kaza, a paved road climbs to Kibber via the Ki Monastery turn-off (about 45 minutes).
- Kaza is reached from Manali over Kunzum (summer) or from Shimla via Kinnaur (longer, more of the year).
- Local buses run Kaza–Kibber daily in summer; taxis run year-round.
Best time to visit
June to September for village life and the sanctuary; December to March for snow leopard, with hard cold and limited services.
