Sundernagar Lake

The Sundernagar reservoir was created as a balancing storage for the Beas–Sutlej Link, which carries diverted Beas water to the Dehar power house. It sits right next to Sundernagar, the second-largest town in Mandi district, on the Chandigarh–Manali highway. A walking path and gardens run along one shore, making it an easy evening stroll for residents and a short break for travellers. The Mahamaya temple on a low hill above the town and the old Sukhdev Vatika gardens are the usual add-ons. It is a convenience stop rather than a scenic lake.

1. Sundernagar is on the Chandigarh–Manali highway, about 25 km south of Mandi.
2. All Mandi-bound buses from Chandigarh and Bilaspur pass through the town.
3. Nearest airport is Bhuntar (about 85 km); Kiratpur is the nearest expressway point from the plains.

October to March for pleasant weather; summers are warm at this lower elevation.

• It is an urban lake next to a highway town — go in with modest expectations.
• Boating, when available, is limited and weather-dependent.
• Best treated as a leg-stretch on the drive rather than a planned stop.
