The Ridge, Shimla

The Ridge is Shimla's central open space, a broad level stretch of road above the Mall where the town gathers for fairs, rallies and the summer festival. Christ Church and the mock-Tudor library stand along it; Scandal Point at its west end links to the Mall and the pedestrian lift down to Cart Road. Under the surface lies a British-era water reservoir. There is no traffic, so it is the one place in Shimla to walk freely, and the point from which most visitors first get their bearings.

1. Shimla is about 115 km from Kalka (nearest broad-gauge railhead) and reachable on the narrow-gauge toy train.
2. The Ridge is a 5–10 minute walk up from the Mall; the public lift connects Cart Road to the Mall.
3. Vehicles are not allowed on the Ridge or the Mall — walk from the lift or a nearby taxi stand.

March to June and September to November for clear air; the Ridge is busiest and liveliest in the summer holidays. Winter brings occasional snow.

• The Ridge and Mall are strictly pedestrian; leave the car at Cart Road or a designated lot.
• Views of the snow line depend entirely on the weather — hazy afternoons are common.
• It is a steep climb up from Cart Road; use the lift if that is a problem.
