About
Chamunda Devi is one of the major goddess temples of Kangra, set where the Baner khad runs below the Dhauladhar. The main shrine, rebuilt in modern form, holds an image of Chamunda that is kept covered; behind it, a path leads to the older Adi Himani Chamunda temple high on the ridge, a steep climb or a long walk. The riverside setting, with cremation ghats nearby, ties the temple to the goddess's fierce aspect. It is busy during Navratri and on Saturdays and draws a steady flow of pilgrims year-round.
How to reach
- It is about 15 km from Dharamshala and 10 km from Palampur, on the road between them.
- Buses on the Dharamshala–Palampur route stop at Chamunda.
- Gaggal (Kangra) airport is about 25 km; Pathankot is the nearest major railhead.
Best time to visit
March to June and September to November. Navratri (twice a year) is the peak; expect long queues then.
