Tsuglagkhang Complex (Dalai Lama Temple)

The Tsuglagkhang is the principal temple of the Tibetan exile community and the place where the Dalai Lama gives public teachings when he is in residence. It holds large images of the Buddha, Avalokiteshvara and Padmasambhava, some carrying relics rescued from Tibet. Sharing the complex are the Namgyal Monastery, the personal monastery of the Dalai Lamas, and the Tibet Museum, which documents the events of 1959 and after. A kora, or devotional circuit, runs around the hillside below, lined with prayer wheels and mani stones.

1. It is a 10–15 minute walk from McLeod Ganj's main square, downhill past the bus stand.
2. McLeod Ganj is about 9 km above Dharamshala; buses and taxis run between them.
3. Gaggal (Kangra) airport is about 22 km.

March to June and September to November. Teaching dates draw large crowds — check the official schedule if you want to attend.

• Security screening applies for teachings; large bags, cameras and phones may be restricted.
• Dress modestly and walk the kora clockwise.
• The Dalai Lama travels often — his being in residence is not guaranteed on any given date.
