Kareri Lake Trek

Kareri Lake is a clear, shallow lake fed by snowmelt from the Dhauladhar; the Nyund stream drains out of it. The trek starts from Kareri village, reached by road from Dharamshala via Ghera, and climbs through oak and rhododendron forest along the stream, past the shepherd settlement of Reoti, to the lake and its small Shiva temple. Most people camp near the lake and return the next day; strong walkers do it as a long single day. The lake often freezes in winter and the trail then needs snow gear.

1. Drive from Dharamshala to Kareri village via Ghera (about 1.5 hours).
2. Nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra); Pathankot is the nearest broad-gauge railhead.
3. Arrange a guide and camping in Dharamshala or Kareri; there is no lodge at the lake.

April to June and September to October. The lake freezes in winter (a harder snow trek); avoid the July–August monsoon.
